Its location about 220 kilometres from Moscow makes Rzhev an important transport hub on the Volga with a strong economy based on mechanical engineering. During the Second World War, one of the worst battles of the period took place here – Rzhev was almost completely destroyed by the Germans. Today it is a modern city with an extensive recreational area. Hills, meadows and trees bring peace to the soul. First mentioned in 1216, Rzhev has been under Moscow’s rule since 1449, after being fought over for centuries.
In 2009, Gütersloh and Rshew sealed their town partnership. They are the furthest twinned cities, with a distance of over 2,100 kilometres.
